The Media library keeps every image, video and PDF of your store in one place. You upload a file once and use it again on products, in your online store, in emails and in content. Each file keeps its alt text, its focal point and a list of the places where you use it. So changing or replacing it is safe.
Open it under Online store → Media library, or from Online store → Content with the Media library button.
What you can upload
| Kind | Formats | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Image | JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and AVIF | 20 MB and 40 megapixels per image |
| Vector | SVG | 256 KB, plain images only |
| Document | 20 MB | |
| Video | MP4 and WebM | 250 MB, 20 MB if your store cannot take large videos yet |
You can add up to 20 files at once. A file you already have is recognized by its contents, so you are not asked to keep the same image twice.
Upload files
Open the Media library.
Select Upload and choose your files. You can also drag files anywhere onto the page.
Each file appears with a progress bar and is ready to use when the bar is gone.
A file that cannot be uploaded stays in the list with the reason, for example that the image is too large or the SVG contains scripts. Fix the file and upload it again.
Find files
- Search looks in file names, alt text and tags.
- All, Images, Videos and Documents narrow the list by kind. Images include SVG files.
- The left side lists All files, Recent uploads (the last 7 days) and Not used, which shows files that no product, page, email or setting uses.
- Under Where you use it you can see only the files used by products, the online store, emails, content or apps.
- Select a tag to show only files with that tag. Select more than one to see files that have all of them.
- Sort the list by newest, oldest, name or largest, and switch between the grid and the list.
A click on a file opens its details on the right, and a double click shows it full size. In the large view you can page with the arrows and zoom in.
The address of the page remembers your filters and the file you have open, so you can bookmark a view or send the link to a colleague.
Tag files
Tags are your own labels, such as autumn-2026 or logo.
Tick the box in the corner of a file, or Shift-click it. A bar with the number of selected files appears at the bottom. While any file is selected, a plain click selects too.
Select Tag.
Type a tag and press Enter to add it, or choose one that is already in use. To take a tag off, select it under Remove tags.
Select Save tags.
A file can have up to 30 tags. You can also add and remove tags on a single file in its details.
Add alt text
Alt text describes an image for people who use screen readers and for search engines. It is also shown when an image cannot load.
Select a file to open its details on the right.
Under Alt text, choose the language and write a short description of what the image shows.
Repeat for the other languages of your store. The text saves when you leave the field.
Alt text belongs to the file, so every place that uses the file shows it. Leave it empty for purely decorative images.
Set the focal point
When a theme shows an image in a narrower frame than the picture itself, part of it is cropped. The focal point tells the theme which part to keep.
Open the file's details and select Set focal point.
Click the spot that matters most in the picture, for example a face or a product, or drag the marker there.
Under How it is cropped you see what stays of the picture in a wide, a square and a portrait frame.
Select Done. Reset to centre puts the point back in the middle.
Next to the button the details show whether the image has a focal point of its own or is Centred.
See where a file is used
The file's details list every product, category, page, email and setting that uses it, each with a link that opens that place. Use it before you change a file, to see what the change touches.
If the list is empty, the file is not used anywhere, and you can delete it.
Replace a file
Replacing swaps the picture without touching the places that use it.
Open the file's details.
Select Replace with a new file and choose the new file. It must be the same kind, for example an image for an image.
Wait for the upload to finish.
Every product, page and email that used the old file now shows the new one. The name, tags and alt text stay.
Delete files
You can delete a file that nothing uses.
Tick one or more files, or open a single file's details.
Select Delete and confirm. You can also delete a single file with Delete in its details.
If the store cannot yet tell where a file is used, Delete is switched off and the page says so. A file that is still used is not deleted. After you confirm, the page lists each refused file with the places that use it. Replace the file there or take it out, and then delete it. The Not used view shows what is safe to delete.
Choose a file elsewhere
You choose images and files in many places: a product's images, the theme customizer, emails, content and the Brand page. Everywhere the same media library opens in a dialog. On a phone it opens in a sheet from the bottom.
In the field, select Choose from the media library, or drop the file on the field.
Search, filter by kind, use or tag, and pick the file. Where a field takes several files, such as a product's images, they are numbered in the order you pick them and go in in that order.
If the file is not in the library yet, select Upload or drop it into the dialog. The uploaded file is picked right away.
Select the button at the bottom, which names where the file goes, for example Add to product.
You can set the alt text and the focal point in the dialog too, in the picked file's details. On a phone the details open when you press and hold a file.
Fields that ask for a logo, such as the theme header and emails, show your brand logo by default, and the label next to them says so (Brand logo). To use another logo in one place, choose one with Another logo for this theme. The label then reads Own in this theme. Back to the brand logo returns to the brand's.
Brand
In an image's details, Set as logo or Set as icon in the Brand block makes the image your store's logo or icon. The Brand page explains the rest. The brand's logo for dark backgrounds is previewed on a dark background, so a light drawing stays visible.
Storage
Every store has 100 GB of media storage on every plan. The Storage meter at the top shows how much you have used, and the same row is on Settings → Plan & billing. When you reach 80% you get a notification and the meter says how full it is. When it is full you cannot upload until you delete files you no longer use. Nothing is ever deleted for you.
If something goes wrong
- "This file is used in your store, so you can't delete it." Something still uses the file. Open its details, follow the links and replace or remove it there.
- "Files can't be deleted yet: the store doesn't know every place where you use them." Deleting is switched off until the store knows every place that can hold a file. Replacing and editing still work.
- "Images can be at most 40 megapixels." Make the image smaller and upload it again.
- "This SVG contains scripts, links or outside content, so it can't be uploaded." Export the SVG again as a plain image.
- "Your store has used all of its 100 GB media storage." Delete unused files, then upload again.
- You cannot see Upload, Tag or Delete. Your role does not allow it. Ask the store owner to change your role under Settings → Users and permissions.
