Your store asks customers for cookie consent on their first visit. The tracking apps you install follow their answer. The consent itself works without any setup. You only decide how the cookie bar looks and what it says. You do that in the customizer.
What shoppers see
- On the first visit a cookie bar appears with a short text and buttons to accept everything or only what is necessary.
- A preferences link opens a dialog where the shopper chooses by category: necessary cookies are always on, analytics and marketing are optional and stay off until the shopper agrees.
- The choice is remembered. If a shopper later withdraws consent, tracking stops and the optional cookies are cleared.
The bar and the dialog are shown in the shopper's language. Built-in wording exists in English, Hungarian, German, Slovak, Romanian and Polish.
What follows the shopper's choice
Tracking apps wait for consent:
- Google Tag Manager starts with every consent signal denied and updates them when the shopper answers.
- The built-in store analytics runs without cookies until the shopper agrees.
- Conversion tracking of price comparison sites such as Árukereső waits for marketing consent.
Cookies your store needs to work, such as the cart and sign-in, are necessary and do not depend on the bar.
Change how the cookie bar looks
Open Online store and choose Themes.
Choose Customize on your theme.
In the sidebar, open Footer and select Cookie bar. The bar appears on the preview so you can see your changes.
Under Layout, choose the layout of the bar (floating, box or full-width bar) and its Position on the screen.
Decide about the buttons: give them equal widths, swap their order, and show or hide the preferences link.
Under Colors, set the background, the text and the colors of the two buttons. Each has a light and a dark value.
Choose Publish.
The same settings are also under Theme settings in the sidebar, in the Cookie bar group. See Theme settings.
Change the wording
Select Cookie bar in the customizer as above.
Choose the language you want to edit in the top bar.
Under Text, type your own title, description and the labels of the accept all, necessary only and preferences buttons.
Repeat for your other languages.
Choose Publish.
Leave a field empty to use the built-in text for each language. This is the safest choice if you sell in several languages and do not want to maintain the wording yourself.
Switch the cookie bar off
Show cookie bar under Visibility hides the bar.
Write your cookie policy
The bar asks for consent. The explanation of which cookies you use and why belongs in a cookie policy.
Open Online store and choose Content.
Choose New and pick Legal page.
Under Policy, choose Cookie policy and write the text.
Choose Publish and set In force from.
Customers open legal pages from your store's footer. See Pages, blog and content.
Good to know
- The cookie bar belongs to the theme. If you switch to another theme, check its cookie bar settings too.
- Colors, layout and position are shared by every language. Only the wording is per language.
- The categories and the list of cookies shown to shoppers cannot be edited.
- Changes reach your store when you publish the theme.
- Poltura gives you the tool, not legal advice. What your cookie policy must say depends on the tools you use and the countries you sell in.
If something goes wrong
- You do not see the bar on your store. You already answered it in that browser. Open the store in a private window. Also check that Show cookie bar is on and the theme is published.
- The bar shows the built-in text instead of yours. Your wording is saved for one language only. Switch the language in the customizer and fill in the others.
- A tracking app shows no data. Visitors who did not consent are not tracked. Check the app's own page for its setup, for example Google Tag Manager.
