Your store has an accessibility statement from the first day. Customers open it from the Accessibility link in your store's footer. It explains how accessible your store is and how customers can tell you about a barrier. You can keep the statement your store writes or publish your own.
Who needs a statement
Since 28 June 2025 the European Accessibility Act applies to online stores that sell to consumers in the European Union. A store covered by it has to work for people with disabilities and has to say how it meets the requirements. That is what the accessibility statement does.
Microenterprises are exempt: businesses with fewer than 10 employees and an annual turnover or balance sheet total of no more than EUR 2 million. A statement still helps customers, so your store shows one either way.
This page explains how the feature works. It is not legal advice. If you are unsure whether the rules apply to you, ask an adviser in your country.
What the statement your store writes says
The statement follows the structure of the European model statement:
- The standard: the store is designed to meet WCAG 2.1 at level AA, the level the European standard EN 301 549 sets.
- How far the store meets it: partly. The pages, the cart and the checkout are built to meet it, but some content may not meet it yet.
- What customers can rely on: keyboard use, screen reader labels, enough contrast, text enlarged to 200%, clear checkout errors and less motion when the device asks for it.
- Known limitations: product photos and descriptions without a full text description, downloadable documents, and the pages of payment and delivery providers.
- How to report a barrier: your public email and phone from your business details, and a link to your contact page.
- Where to turn next: the authority that oversees accessibility in the customer's country.
- The review date: when the store's design and checkout were last checked.
The statement is written in English and Hungarian. In other languages it shows in English, so write your own page if you sell in other languages.
Publish your own statement
Start from the same text and change what is different for your store.
Open Online store and choose Content.
Choose New.
Under Start from a template, choose Accessibility statement. A new page opens with the statement written in your store's language, with your email and phone already filled in. Its Page purpose is Accessibility statement.
Read the text and change what does not match your store. For example, add the limitations of videos or custom sections you added, or name the authority in your country.
Choose Publish. From now on the footer link opens your page instead of the statement your store writes.
To translate your page, open it again and choose a language, as with any other page. See Pages, blog and content.
Keep the statement true
- Describe your pictures. Give every product picture an alt text that says what it shows. Customers using a screen reader hear this text instead of seeing the picture.
- Check your own changes. If you change your theme with code or add your own sections, make sure they work with a keyboard alone and have enough contrast.
- Offer documents in another format. If a manual or data sheet is only a scanned PDF, be ready to send its text when a customer asks.
- Review it regularly. Look at the statement when you change your theme or checkout, and at least once a year.
Good to know
- Your store's checkout and the default Poltura theme are built and checked against WCAG 2.1 level AA. Other themes and your own changes are your responsibility to check.
- Only one page can have the Accessibility statement purpose. To give the purpose to another page, remove it from the first one.
- If you unpublish or delete your own page, the statement your store writes appears again.
