# Markets

Sell to other countries from one store. Group your countries into markets and choose the currencies and address of each, with the languages that address shows.

- Where: Settings → Markets

One store can sell abroad. A **market** is a group of countries that shop the same way: in the same currencies, at the same address. Hungary can be one market on `yourshop.hu`, Austria and Germany another on `yourshop.hu/at`, Romania a third on `yourshop.ro`.

Every market has:

- **Countries**: the countries it is made for and delivers to. A market has at least one, and a country belongs to one market only. The first one is pre-selected at checkout.
- **Currencies**: what its shoppers pay in. The first one is the default.
- **Address**: where its shoppers go. Your main domain, a folder on it such as `yourshop.hu/at`, or a domain of its own. Several markets can share an address.

The **languages** belong to the address: every market there shows the same ones. Whether the address is **Live** or **Draft** belongs to it too.

You sell to exactly the countries in your markets. Languages and currencies belong to the whole store, and markets pick from them. Prices in a currency other than your store currency are converted for you, or you set them yourself. Tax comes from the country an order is shipped to.

The **Markets** page lists one row per market: its name (or its countries), its **Address**, the address's **Languages**, its **Currencies**, its **Status** and what it still lacks. When markets share an address, the one shoppers see there first is marked **Default**. Below the list, **Shop-wide** leads to **Languages** and **Currencies**.

![The Markets page with one live market, Hungary + 4 countries, on the main address, and the Shop-wide links to languages and currencies below](https://docs.poltura.com/screenshots/en/settings/markets.webp)

_Each row shows the market, its address, languages, currencies and status._

Your **home country** is the first country of the market your main address shows first. It is the one checkout starts with on your main address. Some changes would make another country your home country. That happens when you remove it from that market, put another country first, delete that market or make another market the default there. Such a change says "This changes your home country from … to …" and asks you to confirm with **Make … the home country**.

A store without any market sells everywhere. Until you add the first one, shoppers from any country can check out.

## Before you start

- You need the Owner, Administrator or Store manager role. Putting a domain live or stopping it also needs permission to manage domains.
- A domain of your own must be connected to the store before it can show the shop. See [Domains](https://docs.poltura.com/en/settings/domains/#connect). Sharing an address or a folder on your main domain needs nothing extra.

## Add a market

You pick the countries, the rest is suggested. Most of the time you only confirm.

1. Open **Settings** and choose **Markets**.

2. Click **Add market**. The **New market** screen opens.

3. Pick one or more **Countries**. Any country can be picked. One that is already in another market shows "In …: moves here" and moves to the new market when you create it.

4. Everything below is filled in from the countries. Check it, or just confirm:

   - **Market name**, if you like. Without one the market is named after its countries, for example "Austria, Germany" or "European Union, 12 countries".
   - **Currency**, from the first country. A currency your store does not have yet is marked **(new)** and follows your store currency's prices at the daily ECB rate, with no margin. You fine-tune it later under **Currencies**.
   - **VAT in …** for each country that has no rate yet. It is the country's standard rate.
   - **Address**. **Share …** puts the market on your main address, with the languages it already shows. **Share another address** puts it on an address another market uses. **Its own folder**, such as `yourshop.hu/at`, gives it an address of its own on your main domain: nothing to buy or connect. You can also pick **A domain you have** or **A new domain**: for a new domain type the **Domain name**, and the screen tells you whether it is available. A domain your shop already has is picked under **A domain you have**, and your shop's own platform address cannot be a market's domain. The screen suggests sharing your main address when it shows the countries' language, and a folder of its own when it does not. Your first market is always at your main address.
   - **Language**, only for a folder or a domain of its own. A language your store does not have yet is marked **(new)** and starts as a draft. Tick **Translate the shop into …** to start a machine translation now. Shoppers never see a draft language, so while it is a draft the new address starts in your store's default language. Once you publish the language under **Languages**, the market's page offers **Show … on …** to put it first there.

5. Read **Before it goes live**: whether a payment method can charge the currency and whether a shipping zone covers the countries. **Add shipping** opens the delivery settings.

6. Click **Create**. The market's page opens.

When countries move over from other markets, the screen names them, for example "Austria moves here from DACH." If that would leave another market without countries, it says "… would be left without countries." and offers **Remove it and create**: the emptied market is deleted and the new one created in the same save, so its countries are never left without a market. A market that cannot go is named instead: the only market of your main address goes only when the new market shares your main address, and a market live on its own address has to stop serving first.

Saving adds the currency to the store with conversion, the language as a draft, the VAT rates the countries were missing, and the market itself. A new folder or domain is saved as a draft.

## Change a market

Click a market on the **Markets** page. Its page has these sections:

- **Before it goes live**: what the market still lacks, such as no shipping or no tax for one of its countries, a country or a currency no payment method serves, a language less than 80% translated, or "… waits for …": its address shows your default language while its countries' language is still a draft. **Languages** leads to where you publish it; once it is published the line offers **Show … on …**. When some of its countries have no shipping, **Sell only where you ship** keeps just the countries a shipping zone with a delivery option covers (a zone for part of a country covers that country).
- **Market**: its **Name**, which only you see (clear it to name the market after its countries again), and its **Countries**, one chip per country. A chip's menu removes the country or pre-selects it at checkout. A market of many countries names a few and lets you search for the one to pre-select. **Add countries** opens a list of every country; one that is in another market moves here when you save. If that would leave the other market empty, the list offers **Remove … and move its countries here**, which happens in the same save.
- **Address**: where the market is served, with **Change** (see below), and **Serves**: how it reaches shoppers.
- **What shoppers see**: the **Languages** of the address and the market's **Currencies**, each a chip. A chip's menu makes it the default or removes it; **Add a language** and **Add a currency** add one. The default is the one a new visitor gets. Under the currencies an example shows a real price converted.
- **More settings for …**: links to **Shipping**, **Payments**, **Emails** (with the address the market's emails come from) and **Taxes**.

![The page of the Hungary + 4 countries market with Before it goes live, the name and country chips, the address and the languages shoppers see](https://docs.poltura.com/screenshots/en/settings/markets-market.webp)

_Click the cross on a chip to remove a country or a language._

An address shows only published languages, and a market only currencies the store has. Draft languages are listed under the languages and can be added once you publish them. A change the store refuses is said beside the row it is about, or once at the top of the page.

**Delete market** removes the market. Its countries are no longer sold to until you add them to another market. The button is missing for the only market at your main address. It is also missing for the only market of a live address. Stop serving that address first.

### Change the address

Click **Change** next to **Address**. Emails about the market's orders, and the campaigns and automations its customers get, link to the new address and are sent from it. You can choose:

- **An address another market uses**: the market joins it and shows its languages.
- **A domain you have**: the domain becomes the market's own address.
- **A folder on your main domain**, such as `yourshop.hu/at`.
- Connect or buy a domain.

Your main address always keeps a market. If this is the only market there, add or move another market there first.

A live market that moves to a domain you have puts that domain live with it, and a domain it leaves alone sends its visitors to your main address again. If a domain cannot change, nothing moves. A live market that joins an address that is not live yet is moved and says so: put the address live to show the market there.

## Markets that share an address

Several markets can be served at the same address. Your main domain can serve Hungary in forints and the rest of the EU in euros, for example.

- Each shared address has a **default** market: the one a visitor sees before choosing. On a market's page, **Default here** makes it the default of its address. **Also serves** links to the other markets there.
- Visitors choose their market in the shop's language and currency menu. The shop never guesses it from where they are. The choice is remembered, and prices switch to that market's currency.
- The languages belong to the address, so every market there shows the same ones. On the market's page they read **Languages (shared)**, and a change there applies to every market at that address.
- The address does not change with the market: links stay the same whichever market a visitor chose.

## Put a market live

An address in **Draft** has its settings but does not show them yet. A draft folder cannot be visited. A draft domain sends its visitors to your main address. Live and draft belong to the address, so every market that shares it goes live or stops together.

1. If the market has a domain of its own, make sure it is connected. If it is not, the page offers **Buy a domain** and **Connect …**.
2. Fix what **Before it goes live** lists, or decide it can wait.
3. Click **Go live**. Shoppers at its address see the languages and currencies you set. A folder goes live at once, since your main domain already shows the shop.

**Stop serving** takes a live address offline again. A folder stops answering, and a domain sends its visitors to your main address. Its settings stay.

On the [Domains](https://docs.poltura.com/en/settings/domains/) page each address says **Serves the shop** or **Redirects to the primary address**, and its menu has **Serve the shop here** and **Redirect to the primary address**. Only an address of your own that points straight at your shop can serve it.

## Languages

**Settings → Languages** lists the store's languages with their status and the addresses that show them, live or not, the same way **Markets** does.

- **Published** languages can be shown at an address. **Draft** languages can be translated and previewed in the customizer, but shoppers never see them.
- **Publish** and **Unpublish** switch the status. The store's default language is always published.
- **Choose its addresses** chooses the addresses that show a language, and **Make it an address's default** where it comes first. Every market at such an address shows it. The changes are checked together and saved together: if one is refused, none is made.
- A language that an address shows cannot be unpublished or removed. The message names the address and links to its market: take the language off that address first.
- Translate a language under [Translations](https://docs.poltura.com/en/online-store/translations/). Put it live when it is translated well enough: a market warns you when one of its languages is less than 80% translated.

## Currencies

**Settings → Currencies** lists every currency of the store: how its prices are made (**Store currency**, **Converted** with the number of fixed prices, or **Manual**), its exchange rate, and the **Markets** that sell in it. A currency that no payment method can charge is flagged. **Choose its markets** chooses the markets that sell in it, one row per market and its address, and **Make it a market's default** where it comes first. As with languages, the changes are saved together or not at all.

Click **Edit** on a currency to choose:

- **Pricing**: **Converted from** your store currency, so prices follow your store currency's prices, or **Manual**, so you enter every price on the product page.
- **Exchange rate**: **Automatic daily** from the ECB (the default) or the MNB, picked under **Rate from**, or **Fixed**, a rate you type that stays until you change it.
- **Margin**: added on top of the rate, from 0 to 50%. 0% keeps the rate as it is.
- **Rounding**: the price point converted prices land on, for example **Ends in 90** (2 490 Ft) or **Ends in .90** (9.90 €). Converted prices are always rounded **up**, so the margin is never lost. The example under the fields shows a real price converted the way the store will do it.

The drawer also warns when some of your payment methods cannot charge the currency, and shows its tax setting. A converted currency follows your store currency's setting for whether prices include tax. A manual currency has its own.

### When converted prices change

- Prices are converted every evening, after the ECB and MNB publish their rates.
- A price is rewritten only when the rate moved more than 2% since it was last written. Small daily moves do not change your prices.
- A change to your store-currency price, to the margin, the rounding or the rate source is converted straight away, without waiting for the 2% rule.
- **Convert prices now** runs the conversion on demand.

Gift cards are not converted. Products whose prices a supplier sync sets in every currency keep the supplier's prices.

### Set a fixed price for one product

A fixed price always wins over conversion.

1. Open the product and the version you want to price.
2. Under **Other currencies** a converted price is shown as **Converted** and cannot be typed into. Click **Set … price**.
3. Type the amount and save. The price now reads **Set by hand. Clear it to convert again.**

To go back to the converted price, clear the fixed amount and save. The next conversion fills it in again.

> **Warning**
>
> Importing prices from a file, such as an edited export, saves every amount in the file as a fixed price, the converted ones too. Clear the prices you want converted again after the import.

## The countries you sell to

You sell to every country that is in one of your markets. There is no separate list.

- To sell somewhere new, add the country to a market with **Add countries** on the market's page, or create a market for it with **Add market**.
- To move a country to another market, pick it on that market. It leaves its old market when you save.
- Whether tax and shipping are set up for each country shows on each market's page, under **Before it goes live**.
- A shopper cannot ship to a country that is in none of your markets.

## Delivery area

Each market delivers to its own countries. That is its delivery area.

- At checkout the delivery country list holds only the chosen market's countries, its first country pre-selected.
- The billing address can be in any country, in every market. Saved addresses are kept for the whole store.
- Checkout shows no extra text: the list simply holds those countries. If another country still arrives (an old saved address, for example), the shopper reads "We don't deliver to Germany from this shop" and picks one from the list. Prices never change and nobody is sent anywhere.
- Prices never change because of a delivery address: a shopper always pays what the market showed.
- Each market's shop states its delivery area ("Delivery area: …") at the end of its terms of service, so shoppers can read it before they order.

## What shoppers see

- Each address shows its own languages, and each market its own currencies. Search engines are told which address and language each page has.
- At an address with several markets, a visitor first sees the default market and can choose another in the language and currency menu. The choice is remembered and prices switch to that market's currency.
- When a market has more than one currency, the shopper can pick among them. The choice is remembered and moves the cart to the new currency.
- The language and currency menu also lists your markets at other addresses by name. Moving to one takes the cart along. On another domain the shopper signs in again.
- Checkout lists the chosen market's delivery area and starts with its first country. An address the shopper typed is never changed. A country checkout only suggested stays when it is in the new market, and changes to the new market's first country otherwise.

## Emails follow the market

An order placed on `yourshop.hu/at` gets emails whose links lead back to `yourshop.hu/at`, in a language that address shows. Campaigns and automations link a customer to the market they last signed in at or ordered from, and show products in that market's currency. When a market moves to another address, these emails follow it.

Password reset and sign-in emails lead to the shop the customer asked from. Other account emails follow the market where the customer last signed in.

Emails are sent from the market's domain when it has a sending domain that is active under [Emails](https://docs.poltura.com/en/settings/emails/): one for the same domain or the domain above it. Otherwise they come from your store's default address. The market's page shows which one it uses next to **Emails**.

## When you need a separate store

One store covers several markets, languages and currencies. Open a separate store when a market needs:

- a different theme or layout;
- its own customer accounts;
- a brand shoppers should see as another company.

## Good to know

- Payment methods are set for the whole store: each payment app says which currencies it charges under **Charges in** on the [Payments](https://docs.poltura.com/en/settings/payments/) page, and **Available for** can limit it to some countries.
- A currency that a market sells in cannot be removed from the store. The message names the market: take the currency off that market first.
- When another domain becomes your primary one (you make it primary on the [Domains](https://docs.poltura.com/en/settings/domains/) page, or a domain you chose as primary goes live), the markets of your main address move to it within a few minutes. If that domain already has a market of its own, they stay where they were: move them under **Markets**.
- A product feed for a country links to the market that has that country.
- In developer mode, [Regions](https://docs.poltura.com/en/developer/regions/) shows one region per currency. The store keeps them in step for you.

## If something goes wrong

- **"Another market already has that country."** Pick it on this market again to move it here.
- **"… would be left without countries."** Moving the country would empty another market. Add another country to that market first, or remove it.
- **"Your main address always keeps a market."** Add or move another market to your main address first, then move or delete this one.
- **"This changes your home country from … to …"** The change would make another country your home country. Confirm with **Make … the home country**, or change something else.
- **"… waits for …"** Publish the language under **Languages**, then click **Show … on …** on the market's page.
- **"… is live on its own address. Stop serving it before you remove it."** Click **Stop serving**, then delete the market.
- **"We don't deliver to … from this shop."** A delivery country outside the market reached checkout. Add the country to the market if you want it to deliver there.
- **"That language is not published yet."** Publish it under **Languages** first.
- **"Add that currency to the shop under Currencies first."** A market can only show store currencies.
- **"No payment method charges …".** Install or switch on a payment app that charges that currency. Until then shoppers cannot pay in it.
- **A converted price did not change after the rate moved.** The move was 2% or less. Use **Convert prices now** after changing the margin or rounding if you want to see the result at once.
- **"Another change was being saved at the same time."** Two changes collided. Try again.
