# Domains

See which domains serve your store and connect one of your organization's domains to it.

The Domains page lists the domains that point at the store you are working in. You see the addresses your customers use and whether each one is live. A domain belongs to your organization, not to one store. You add it once under [Organization domains](https://docs.poltura.com/en/settings/organization/domains/) and then connect it to a store. Domains are in Beta.

## Before you start

- You need the Owner or Administrator role to connect or change a domain. A Read-only member can see the list; other roles do not see **Domains** in Settings.
- The domain must already be in your organization. If it is not, first [connect a domain you own, buy one or transfer one in](https://docs.poltura.com/en/settings/organization/domains/#buy).
- A domain can be connected while the store is still private, before you go live.

## Connect a domain to this store

1. Open **Settings** and choose **Domains**.
2. Click **Link a domain**. A drawer opens: "Point one of the organization's domains at this shop."
3. Choose the **Domain**. Only domains that are not yet on this store are listed.
4. Leave **Hostname** empty to use the domain itself, or type a full hostname inside it, for example `shop.example.com`.
5. Click **Assign to this shop**. The drawer closes and the domain appears in the list.
6. Click the domain's row, then open its **DNS** tab to see what is still needed. A domain on **Poltura DNS** needs nothing more from you. A domain on its **Own DNS provider** shows the **Required records** to add where its DNS is managed.
7. Wait for the checks. They run every few minutes. When the records are found, the hostname turns **Active** and your store answers on it with a certificate issued by Poltura.

> **Good to know**
>
> If your domain uses its own DNS provider and you want the bare domain (without `www`) to be the store's address, assign it from the domain's own page instead: open [Organization domains](https://docs.poltura.com/en/settings/organization/domains/#manage), choose the domain and use **Assign a shop**. That drawer asks whether your DNS provider supports CNAME flattening and sets up the `www` redirect for you.

## Read the list

Each row is one domain of the organization that has at least one hostname on this store.

| Column      | What it shows                                                                                |
| ----------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Domain**  | The domain name.                                                                             |
| **Status**  | **Active**, **Parked**, **Needs attention** or **Error**.                                    |
| **DNS**     | **Poltura DNS** or **Own DNS provider**.                                                     |
| **Shop**    | The stores its hostnames point at.                                                           |
| **Expires** | The expiry date and whether automatic renewal is on, for domains registered through Poltura. |

Click a row to open the domain's page under Organization domains. The row menu jumps straight to its **DNS** or **Shops** tab.

## Good to know

- Your store's free Poltura address is not listed here. You find it on the [Store status](https://docs.poltura.com/en/settings/store-status/) page as **Store address**.
- Everything else about a domain is done on its own page: DNS records, moving it to another store, parking, renewal, the registrant and deleting it. See [Organization domains](https://docs.poltura.com/en/settings/organization/domains/#manage).
- Moving a domain between stores of the same organization is free and does not touch the registration.
- When the last hostname of a domain is disconnected, the domain becomes **Parked** and stays with the organization.

## If something goes wrong

- **The list is empty ("No domains yet").** No organization domain is connected to this store yet. Use **Link a domain**.
- **"Every domain of this organization is already assigned to this shop."** There is nothing left to link. Add another domain under Organization domains first.
- **The hostname stays "Waiting for DNS".** The required records were not found yet. Compare the domain's **DNS** tab with your DNS provider. A change can take up to 24 hours to spread. On the **Shops** tab, **Verify now** runs the check again.
- **"You do not have permission to change domains."** Ask an Owner or Administrator.
