# Smart recommendations

Let your store fill the Related and Goes well with lists on its own from purchases, views and similar products, control where they show, and see what they earn.

- Where: Settings → Store settings → Product recommendations

Your store can recommend products on its own. For every product it keeps two lists, **You may also like** and **Goes well with**, and fills the places your hand-picked products leave free. It works from your orders, from what visitors look at and from how alike your products are. It updates every night. Smart recommendations are part of every plan and are on from the start.

The recommendations are the same for every shopper. They depend on the product, not on the person, so they need no cookie and no consent.

## Switch it on or off

Under **Settings → Store settings → Product recommendations**, the **Automatic recommendations** switch turns the whole thing on or off. Next to it you see when the nightly update last ran. When it is off, your hand-picked products show exactly as before.

**In the last 30 days** shows how many orders included a product added to the cart from a recommendation, what those products were worth, and how many orders there were in the 30 days before. **Details in Analytics** opens the full picture. Some of those products would have been bought anyway, so read the number as a sign of what recommendations do, not as extra sales you can count on.

## Where they show

**Where they show** has one switch for each place:

- **Product page: You may also like**: similar products and products viewed together, as cards at the bottom of the product page.
- **Product page: Goes well with**: products bought together, in small rows under the **Add to cart** button.
- **Cart**: products that go with what is in the cart.
- **Abandoned cart email**: recommended products at the bottom of the reminder. Only shoppers who subscribed to your newsletter get them.

## What the lists are made of

Each list is filled in this order, and each product shows once, never next to itself:

1. Your hand-picked products.
2. What shoppers often buy together, and for **You may also like** what they often view together.
3. For **You may also like**, products bought side by side. For **Goes well with**, products from a category that shoppers often buy with this one.
4. Similar products: the same category, shared attributes and a similar price.
5. The popular products of the category, then of the store.

**Goes well with** stops after the third step. With too few orders it stays empty instead of showing something unrelated.

Your store never recommends drafts, products that are not in your online store's sales channel, products only reachable by their link, and products you have excluded or hidden. It also always leaves out sold-out products, there is no switch for it.

**What we work from** shows what the engine has to go on: the orders of the last 12 months (imported orders included), the product views of the last 90 days, and how many of your products already have automatic recommendations. It uses only counts, no customer data. Views come only from visitors who accepted statistics cookies.

## On a product

Open a product and find **Related products**. Under each list you will find an **Automatic** list in the order shoppers see it, with the reason for every product, for example "Bought together in 9 orders", "Viewed together in 38 visits", "Similar: Coffee and tea, whole beans, similar price" or "Popular in the store". **How do we choose?** explains the order in a short paragraph.

For each product in the automatic list you can:

- **Pin to the front** to make it one of your hand-picked products. It moves up into your list and stays there.
- Hide it with the eye button. It stops showing for this product only, and it does not come back on its own, but you can bring it back any time from "Hidden recommendations" under the list, with Restore.

A sold-out product is marked **Sold out, not shown right now** and has no buttons. Shoppers do not see it.

Under both lists there are two settings for the product:

- **Automatic recommendations for this product**: switched off, only your hand-picked products show on this product's page and in its cart.
- **Don't recommend it for other products**: the product is not added automatically to the lists of other products. Where you picked it by hand, it stays.

If you switched smart recommendations off in the settings, the product page says so in one line and links to the settings. See also [Related and add-on products](https://docs.poltura.com/en/products/related-products/) for picking products by hand.

## Advanced

**Advanced** is closed at first. Open it to:

- **Excluded categories**: products from these categories are never recommended automatically.
- **Excluded products**: see them and take any of them back with **Allow**. You can also exclude a product on its own page.
- **Similar products' price**: how far a similar product's price may be from this product's, 25%, 50% or 100%.
- **What we take into account**: products bought together, viewed together and similar products. Switch off a signal you do not trust for your store.

Save your changes with the bar that appears at the bottom of the page.

## Your shoppers' privacy

- A list never depends on the visitor. No profile is built and nothing is stored on the shopper's device to show it.
- The engine keeps counts of how often products are bought or viewed together. It keeps no names, carts or visits, and a pair needs more than one customer behind it before it is recommended, so one shopper's basket can never be read from a store page.
- Product views count only from visitors who accepted statistics cookies.
- Everything stays in your store. Nothing is shared with other stores.
