# Coupon restrictions

Decide who can use a discount code, on which products, when, how often and together with what.

- Where: Discounts → a discount code → Edit restrictions

Restrictions are the rules of one discount: which products it covers, how much the shopper has to buy, who may use it, when it is valid, how often it can be used and whether it combines with other discounts. All of them must be true for the code to work.

A discount that has no restrictions yet can be used by anyone on any cart, and it combines with every other discount.

_The Summary repeats your rules in plain sentences._

## Edit the restrictions of a discount

1. Open **Discounts** and select a discount code or an automatic discount.
2. In the **Restrictions** block, select **Edit restrictions**.
3. Change the cards described below. The **Summary** lists the rules in plain sentences as you go.
4. To add a checkout condition, select **Add restriction** and choose one.
5. Save. The **Restrictions** block on the discount shows the new summary.

The same cards appear on the form when you create a discount, so you can set them right away. See [Create a discount](https://docs.poltura.com/en/discounts/create-a-discount/).

## Products

The card is called **Discounted products** for a product discount and **Qualifying products** for an order discount, where the discount applies to the whole order and the products only count toward the minimum.

- **Applies to**: **All products** or **Selected products**. Choose from **Products**, **Categories**, **Collections**, **Tags** and **Types**.
- **Except**: products, categories and so on that are left out. Exceptions always win, even over something selected above.
- **Exclude items already on sale**: leaves out products that have a sale price.

A cart line counts when it matches any selection and none of the exceptions. Buy X get Y discounts ignore this card: their buy and get rules pick the items.

## Minimum requirement

- **No minimum**, **Minimum purchase amount** or **Minimum quantity of items**.
- A minimum amount is entered per currency. A cart in a currency with no amount cannot use the code.
- **Add maximum amount** stops the code once the qualifying subtotal is above the amount.

The minimum is counted on qualifying products before discounts. Shipping is not included.

## Customers

- **Everyone**, **Customer groups** or **Specific customers**.
- For customer groups (segments), choose **Only these** or **All except these**.
- For specific customers, pick customers or type **Email addresses**, one per line. Use `*@example.com` for a whole domain.
- **Signed-in customers only** refuses guests.
- **First order only** allows only customers who have not ordered before.

Guests belong to no segment. When you limit a code to segments, turn on **Signed-in customers only** so that it is clear what happens to guests.

## Usage limits

- **Limit uses per customer** with **Uses per customer**.
- **Total uses** shows the overall limit. You change it in the discount's details, in the **Usage Limit** field.

## Combinations

Choose which other discounts can be used together with this one: **Product discounts**, **Order discounts** and **Shipping discounts**. The card states the result in a sentence, for example that the code won't combine with other discounts.

## Active dates

- **Starts** and **Ends** set the validity period.
- **Limit to days and hours** adds **Days** and **Only between certain hours**. No day selected means every day.
- Days and hours are checked in the time zone named on the card. Start and end follow your own clock.

## Checkout conditions

**Add restriction** offers four more cards. Each one works as **Only these** or **All except these**:

- **Only with certain payment methods**
- **Only with certain shipping methods**
- **Only for certain delivery countries**
- **Only in certain sales channels**

Payment method, shipping method and country are known only later in the checkout. Until the shopper chooses them, the code waits in the cart and applies as soon as the condition is met.

## What shoppers see

- The cart marks each code as applied, waiting or not applied, and gives the reason: for example how much more to add to reach the minimum, that the code is only valid on a first order, or from which date it can be used.
- Payment methods that unlock a waiting code carry an "Unlocks" badge at checkout.
- If the shopper changes the payment method to one the code does not allow, the code stops applying and the total is updated.

## Good to know

- Within a list, any one match is enough. Between cards, every card must be true.
- You cannot save while a card has an error. Fix the highlighted restrictions first.
- Restrictions belong to one discount. A campaign has no restrictions of its own.

## If something goes wrong

- **Pick at least one, or switch this off.** A card is set to **Only these** with an empty list. Add an entry or remove the card.
- **The same item is both selected and an exception.** Remove it from one of the two lists.
- **This doesn't rule out any payment method the store offers.** The payment card has no effect as it is. Check the list against [Payments](https://docs.poltura.com/en/settings/payments/).
- **Some choices could not be loaded.** What is already set is kept. Reload the page and try again.
